Attorney and media personality, Richard Chemaly, known as “Chem” I brought up in the South African city of Bloemfontein. After completing my B.Com (with specialization in Law and Economics) followed by a Bachelor of Laws, he moved to Johannesburg where he cut his teeth at major law firm CDH (then affiliated with DLA Piper internationally).
Living in the iconic Ponte Tower, I discovered various approaches to life which challenged my desire to build a career in traditional corporate law. Taking time out, I locked my apartment, jumped on a train and traveled the country with two rules; no sleeping in the same place more than once and no use of convenient transport.
The result of the journey of discovery led me to realize that I belong in the media space, in turn, leading me to start my law firm focused on media and entertainment.
A media attorney however, should not exist outside of the media world so into radio I went. This opened a world of presenting and unleashed further aspects of my skill set but also introduced me to new opportunities and personalities in the entrepreneurial space.
Rubbing shoulders with entrepreneurs also rubbed off on me which not only led to the increase in offering from my law firm but also got me directly involved in the world of business.
Today, I run the law firm, broadcast, teach aspects of communication from ethics to content and invest in startups.
